We heard rumblings about EMTEC’s Gdium Netbook a while back. Now they are making it all official.

Just announced, this 2.6-pound laptop is light and slender, but promises a 1024 x 600 resolution on its 10-inch screen. Based on open source software, the unit runs the Mandriva Linux OS, and comes with programs, including Firefox, Thunderbird e-mail, instant messaging, VoIP, blog editor, audio/video players and security utilities, as well as a complete Open Office suite of applications for word processing, spreadsheets and presentations.

It also comes with a G-Key, a feature that the company says will “separate Gdium from the rest of the pack.” This bootable USB key stores all of your personal data, leaving nothing on the actual computer.

ST Microelectronics makes the processor, which is based on MIPS-64 architecture. The unit also has its own website, where fellow Gdium-ers can chat, read blogs, and download tools to use with their purchase. 

Don’t worry; the unit is also comes in black and white. Accessories and travel bags are also available.
