One of the hardest parts about setting up a lighting system is determining the best levels for the lights.

It can take a lot of trial and error to get the brightness of each individual fixture just right. Elan Home Systems hopes to simplify the process by shipping its Elan Lighting system with keypads and wall switches pre-programmed with seven basic scenes. You can keep the scenes as is, significantly streamlining installation time, or alter them by changing the light levels at the wall switches and tapping the scene button on the keypad.

Commands are from the keypads travel to the wall switches over a home’s standard electrical wiring, making the Elan Lighting system easy to install in existing homes and to add onto at any time.

The system uses PulseWorx Gen II Universal Powerline Bus (UPB) for signal transmission. Installation involves replacing standard light switches with the system’s UPB-enabled smart switches. Commands issued by wall-mounted keypads can set the lights for certain activities (like watching movies), illuminate pathways between certain rooms, and fade out the lights over a period of time.

Advanced scheduling and remote access (from an iPhone) to the system can be accomplished by adding Elan’s HomeLogic and future “g” system IP-based controllers.

The Elan Lighting system is available as four- and six-zone kits, starting at $1,000.

Products in the kits include:
- In-wall dimmers which can be used as a dimmer, a relay switch or a two-button transmitter.
- In-wall keypad dimmers with buttons that can be programmed to control direct loads, other single devices or scenes.
- Lighting keypad controllers that can be preprogrammed to trigger 6 or 8 preset scenes. The six-button models can accept infrared commands from handheld remotes.
