People have been waiting years for George Lucas to pry his fingers off the Star Wars films and put together a Blu-ray release. Last week, that magical moment happened. However, it wasn’t exactly what fans had been frothing for over the years—or was it?
First came word that the movies would be released as three separate box sets. You could get The Prequel Trilogy (which includes the last three films), The Original Trilogy, or you could skip the inevitable and just buy the entire set as The Complete Saga. In other words, no individual disc purchases, people.
That’s ok, though. At last peek, Amazon was selling the set for $79.99. That’s 43 percent off the title’s list price, and about $10 more that the list for each of the other two sets.
Despite that full 1080p HD image, a new DTS-HD Master Audio 6.1 track, and enough extras for choke Jabba the Hutt, fans don’t seem all that happy. Looking at Amazon’s product page, this set currently has two out of five stars, with over 1,300 Jedi Masters weighing in with an opinion. Apparently, Star Wars fans do not like those movies being messed with.
Lucas, being the perfectionist tweaker that he is, made a few “improvements.” Most notably, there are a lot of changed scenes. (Scroll down for an example.) That would be fine and dandy, but he “forgot” to include the original theatrical films—you know, the ones that everyone wanted in the first place. Ah, maybe the next box set.
Despite the anger, the Star Wars: The Complete Saga Blu-ray set is currently perched at the top of Amazon’s best-seller list. We don’t see it moving anytime soon. If you’re wondering if the nine-disc box is worth your time, money, and maybe a little Internet vent, check out what critics have been saying about the set below.

“In general, whenever the action starts in any of the movies, we’d do well to hang on and enjoy a bold sonic ride. The best and most violent example in Episode V would be the prolonged snow battle on Hoth, a royal @ss-kicking on ice. Episode VI offers up more of the same, although the speeder bike chase certainly stands alone, and the vile gangster Jabba the Hutt has quite a few hangers-on, riff-raff of every species that we can hear in the shadows even when we can’t see them.” Read the Full Review
“I don’t think anyone expected this release of The Complete Saga to be free of controversy. But come on. It’s Star Wars. On Blu-ray. This is a once-in-a-technological-generation event, and if your hatred of George Lucas’ revisionist tinkerings keeps you from enjoying some of your favorite films in high definition, you’re missing out.” Read the Full Review
“While the video presentations waver a bit, the audio presentations are rock solid, producing rocking demo-material for any sound system out there. There are so many special features it will take you weeks to finish them all off.” Read the Full Review
