Creating the 3D experience at home isn’t easy, but the end result is certainly comfortable. While we wait for additional 3D content to come through our cable and satellite providers, we do have a few (yes, just a few) options on Blu-ray 3D disc. Of course, to watch those movies, you will need a player like Samsung’s BD-C6900.

The BD-C6900 differs than your standard Blu-ray player because it can actually play Blu-ray 3D discs; standard Blu-ray players cannot. Of course, you will also need a 3D TV, and if you want to take full advantage of all of the audio and video aspects, a 3D-ready receiver. While you build your 3D arsenal, the C6900 actually does a lot of other stuff as well.

First of all, it does BD Live—right out of the box. Many of today’s Blu-ray players still don’t come packing the storage required, and users often need to add in some type of external device. However, the C6900 features 1GB of internal storage.

Also, the player offers the option of additional content. In other words, while you wait for more Blu-ray 3D discs to drop, the player’s access to Samsung apps should keep you plenty entertained. This feature streams movies, TV shows, games, news, and other content straight to your TV, through the C6900. (Subscription fees do apply on some of the services.)

“Pop one of the few 3D discs available into the drive, and the C6900 demonstrates a pleasingly fast load-time. Unfortunately, while there are impressive degrees of depth to its reproduction of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, it looks a little too much like a series of flat, overlaid images, rather than a rounded, solid whole. It’s certainly not the only player to lack a bit of believability, though, and the vivid but balanced colours prove to be a bonus once more.

Being a first-gen product is tough, so we’d expect Samsung’s BD-C6900 to have its issues. That said, the C6900 rates very well, even though the reviews are a bit of a mixed bag as far as image is concerned. Some also admit that the issues could have been a TV problem and not the player. While they try to figure it out, the C6900 does offer nice 2D playback and a boatload of other content, making it a decent option for your existing setup as well. If you’ve managed to hold out this long, you’re in luck; currently, the player can be found for about $100 less than its $349.99 MSRP.
