Big sound doesn’t always need a big package. If you have the room, by all means, fill every available corner with a giant speaker cabinet. However, soundbars have been secretly filling rooms with sound for years now.

The typical soundbar contains multiple speakers inside one slim cabinet. Many include built-in amplifiers, while some rely on the power of your existing amp. Soundbars are designed to go right under your flat-panel TV. Most can be wall-mounted, which is a nice, clean option. When both the soundbar and TV are mounted, they give off the appearance of one package. Some soundbars are sold as a stand-alone product, while others come packaged with a wireless subwoofer, to complete the full-sound setup.

Polk’s SurroundBar6000 is one of those instant home theater solutions. Using Polk’s own SDA Surround, this unit promises 3D surround sound from one slick package. At less than 2-inches deep, this unit can belt out 160 watts via four 2.75-inch midrange drivers. The setup also comes with a 7-inch subwoofer, which can do 120 watts, without the need to be connected. Because it’s wireless, it makes this setup that much more simple and perfect for the homeowner in search of big sound for a smaller space.

Rating: 3 out of 4 stars
“The Polk Audio SurroundBar 6000 offers a lot of performance for only $499 and does so in a neat little package. It is a breeze to set-up and operate, and comes with an excellent remote. The three inputs make it quite practical, but it would be even better if had an additional optical input. Movie tracks and music sound great; just don’t push the subwoofer too hard at loud levels. An excellent Christmas/Chanukah gift for someone who does not have the space for a 5.1 surround system.”

Home Theater Review
“The SurroundBar 6000 offers an excellent combination of performance, looks, and features. It looks good enough to be featured as a main speaker system in a high-traffic room, and its connectivity will satisfy most users. Yes, it would be nice to have video switching, but you can’t have it all at this price… The Polk SurroundBar 6000 offers an excellent value proposition, with a very effective combination of sonics, features, and looks, and is highly recommended.”

Amazon User Review
“The sound is full and rich and really great. It is not, however, as good as a true 5.1 or 7.1 system. It is pretty darn close and considering how nice it looks and how easy it is, I have no regrets.”

What Electronic House Says

We hate having to suffer on any level—especially when it comes to audio. However, a big system isn’t always needed to produce big sound. Polk seems to have a winner with the SurroundBar6000. It can belt out a lot of sound, even if you don’t have the big system to back it up. That said, this solution can’t share the wealth of good sound to too many components. It only has one optical and two analog inputs, and no love for newer audio technologies. That makes this system better for smaller setups, not just where size is concerned. Still, it does pack a wallop for the price ($499.95); the wireless sub is just icing on the cake!
