OPPO isn’t new to the Blu-ray game, although it may be new to a lot of users. Up until this point, the company has been closer to the hearts of high-end enthusiasts, and that trend should continue with the company’s BDP-95 Blu-ray 3D player.
Designed specifically for the audiophile crowd, the BDP-95 is very similar to OPPO’s other new player, the BDP-93. It offers a second-gen Marvell QDEO chip, two HDMI outputs, 1GB of internal storage, and the option to connect to your wireless network. That networking will come in handy for those days when you don’t want to pop in an actual disc. Currently, this player offers instant on-screen access to VUDU, Netflix, Blockbuster on Demand, Pandora and YouTube.
Of course, it loves discs as well—pretty much all of them. It works with Blu-rays (both 2D and 3D), as well as SACD, DVD-Audio discs, DVD video and CDs.
Of course, with a $999 MSRP, you know that the BDP-95 needs a little something extra special. This player isn’t just all about video. It offers a huge audio boost through by ESS SABRE32 Reference ES9018 Digital-to-Analog Converters, a balanced XLR stereo output, and a linear power supply with toroidal power transformer built by Rotel.
What the Manufacturer Says
“Thanks to the high-performance DAC chips, the toroidal power supply, high quality parts and engineering, the BDP-95 offers a very detailed sound with an extremely low noise floor and distortion. You may hear details from the music that you have missed before. The BDP-95 features a dedicated 2-channel analog output with specially optimized ES9018 DAC and output driving stages. Each output is driven by 4 DAC channels stacking together to achieve even greater audio performance.”

“The BDP-95 also played ultra-high-resolution 176.4-kHz/24-bit WAV files on DVDs from MA Recordings and Reference Recordings. Puente Celeste’s Nama from MA was a standout; the group hails from Argentina. The album was recorded ‘live,’ without compression, overdubs, or processing of any kind, and it sounds as lifelike as they come. The band’s hand percussion instruments sounded so real I felt like I could touch them. It’s funny; high-resolution audio doesn’t immediately seem more ‘detailed,’ it just sounds more like the band is in the room with you.”

Home Theater Review
“The BDP-95 is the player to beat if you are looking for a reference grade universal disc player. I have not had another under-$5,000 player in my system that could outdo the OPPO with its audio performance. Without a doubt there will be some new players released from established audiophile brands that are based on a new OPPO player; some of them may even offer better performance but they will undoubtedly come at a much higher price.”

“The sound is awesome. The imaging’s wonderful, with a wide and deep sound stage, and the overall sound is extremely smooth, dynamic and detailed, with no trace of shrillness unless it’s on the source material. The BDP-95 has taken everything I’ve thrown at it and tossed it back through the speakers as if to say ‘Is that all you’ve got?’”

What Electronic House Says
If you think a Blu-ray player is just about what flashes up on the big screen, then OPPO’s BDP-95 probably isn’t for you. This component is designed for those demanding a lot from the audio side, as well. With a $999 MSRP, you’d better expect to pay for that kind of quality. However, there seems to be more than a few audiophiles willing to do just that for this reference-quality component.
