Dropcam Pro Boasts Better Video and Bluetooth Support
The new camera option still offers 720p HD video and optional cloud storage.

Back in 2012, the Dropcam HD dropped, allowing users to install a simple security option for a mere $149. The low-cost, high-def camera is small and simple to set up. Even better, it’s easy to operate, providing a peek at your home via any web-enabled device.

Oh sure—the Dropcam had some quirks. However, since its initial release, the company has been upgrading the camera’s software and ironing out some of those bugs. Now, they are re-engineering the whole darn thing and releasing it under the name Dropcam Pro.

The Pro in the Dropcam Pro doesn’t mean that you’ll need to call in a professional. The latest Dropcam is still insanely easy to set up, but adds in a few new perks.

First off, the Dropcam Pro promises better wireless connectitivy and video quality. The new camera has a six-element, all-glass lens, as well as a larger image sensor. When compared to its predecessor, the Dropcam Pro has twice the video quality during the day and about seven times (!) better performance at night.

The company is also adding in Bluetooth low energy (BLE), so the Dropcam Pro can be integrated with sensors and other devices around the house. One possibility could start the Dropcam Pro recording whenever one of those sensors gets tripped.

Other features include a dual band Wi-Fi, a 130-degree field of view, an 8x zoom, and a new microphone for better audio. There’s also an Activity Recognition feature in beta. This perk will make it so Dropcam Cloud Recording can recognize motion patterns in your video stream and group those together like activities. Users can even name these types of activities and customize alerts for them.

“At its core, Dropcam is a software and services company. That means Dropcam gets better over time with hassle-free automatic updates to the camera, cloud service, and apps,” said Greg Duffy, Dropcam’s CEO and co-founder. “With features like zoom and enhance, Dropcam Pro is an amazing camera today, and it will be even better tomorrow as we shape it into the ideal hub for consumers to see, sense, and control other devices in their home.”

The Dropcam Pro is available today, with an MSRP of $199. As always, real-time monitoring is free. However, the company does offer Cloud Video Recording (CVR) plans, which start at $9.95 per month.
