Not everyone needs an elaborate security setup. If you’re looking for a peek at your home while away from home, Dropcam promises to make it pretty easy.
The company just announced the Dropcam HD. This super-small camera provides a nice peek at your home from any web-enabled computer or mobile device. Even better, it promises to make those peeks very easy.
According to the company, the setup should be completed in about 60 seconds. Decide where you want to place the Dropcam and plug it in. Then, select your Wi-Fi network and personalize it. That’s about it.
The Dropcam HD camera can deliver 720p H.264 video using AES 256-bit encryption. Promising automated night vision, it can work in both day and night conditions. Also, after the setup process is complete, it doesn’t need any type of assistance from your computer—which doesn’t even need to be on to use the device.
Real-time viewing is free, and includes email and text alerts. If you don’t find yourself peeking in every three seconds (or don’t want to), Dropcam also offers a cloud-based DVR feature. For $9.95 per month, you can score the Plus option and 7 days of storage. The Pro version of the plan bumps DVR storage up to 30 days of full-motion video for a monthly fee of $29.95.
Expect the Dropcam HD to start shipping in March. However, the device is currently available for preorder, for $149.
