Do You Hide in a ‘Man Cave’?
A survey from Service Magic found 40 percent reported having a 'Man Cave' or 'Man Room' in their homes, with another 13 percent in the planning or construction phase.
December 18, 2008 | by Arlen Schweiger

You’ve come home from a hard day’s work. Maybe it’s the weekend. All you want to do is crack open a brew and turn on the big game—in style.

That means big-screen TV, recliner, surround sound, maybe even a refrigerator well within your reach. At least, according to Service Magic those are some of the relevant factors that go into a ‘Man Room’ or ‘Man Cave,’ whose popularity is increasing these days.

The company itself is a service to connect contractors and consumers—so yeah, they were pretty interested in what makes Man Caves tick, and what percentage of guys were actually building, remodeling or redesigning rooms for them.

Some results of their survey:

  • 40 percent have a Man Room in their home
  • Another 13 percent are in the planning or construction phase
  • 80 percent are using either a basement (35 percent), garage (25) or home office (20) as their escape pad
  • The most popular elements are widescreen TV (76 percent), recliner (69), stereo (68), cooler/fridge (67), DVD player (67), computer (65) and surround sound (64)
  • Poker tables and neon “beer” signs are wanted in only 19 percent of Man Rooms
  • Combined, about 70 percent are planning on spending under $5K for their room

And maybe the most important percentage (though it could be weighted by bachelor respondents)? Two-third said that they received “no resistance” when trying to pitch the idea of a Man Cave to their significant other. So go ahead guys, you’re getting the green light most of the time.
