DISH Network to Launch Web-Based Streaming TV Service This Year
The satellite service provider plans to offer streaming options for smartphone and tablet viewers.

So many people are cutting the cord to pay TV, in favor of cheaper, web-based options such as Netflix and Hulu Plus. So how does a service provider compete? If they’re DISH Network, they partner up and plan to launch a whole new streaming service.

Although no formal announcements have been made, Bloomberg says that DISH Network is planning to launch a web-based TV service—and it could be coming sometime before the end of this summer. However, a few other outlets (such as Deadline) and even DISH Chairman Charlie Ergen are saying that the new offering may be pushed closer to the end of the year.

The thing that seems to be holding the whole thing back is the actual content.

If everything goes as planned, DISH will offer a set number of streaming options that’s geared towards younger viewers not wanting to pay a bundle. “DISH is targeting 18-to-34-year-olds who only want to pay $20 or $30 a month to watch video on smartphones and tablets instead of a traditional TV set,” Bloomberg reports.

DISH had previously signed a deal with Disney, which owns several channels, including ABC and ESPN. Now, there’s word that the service provider is talking to CBS, NBCUniversal, A&E, Turner Broadcasting, and others. Sources say that some of the larger players are holding out until DISH can sign at least two major networks and 10 cable networks.

“We’re comfortable launching with what we have, but think there might be some more programmers who will want to experiment with this,” said Ergen. “There’s a few things we have to invent that will take us some time, so we’re looking at something by the end of the year.”
