Last month, when we heard about all of the Olympics video NBC would be airing—to go with the robust high-definition coverage on multiple TV channels—we were curious as to how people would watch these Beijing Games.
Turns out, plenty of people tuned into their laptops and desktops to check out additional footage. Heading into the closing weekend of the two-week extravaganza, NBCOlympics.com had reported 10 million viewers who watched 6 million hours of coverage, or more than 56 million online videos (via USA Today).
We’re guessing the peacock network will be counting 2008 as a success, especially since it had already eclipsed the 2004 Athens online watching 20-fold.
Greater broadband access of course had something to do with that, and the 12-hour-ahead schedule from China probably helped too, as people could tune in on a schedule that fit theirs a bit more conveniently and catch up on events that were taking place during mornings they were at work.
So how did you like the overall coverage online? Did it compare to the beautiful HD broadcasts, or was the sporting event itself enough to keep your attention?
Next NBC will see if we’ll watch the NFL online. Of course, football is king in the U.S.
