Did the Netflix CEO Offend You?
A recent interview with Reed Hastings has Netflix subscribers dropping like flies.

Last week, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings inserted his foot into his mouth during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter

Earlier in the week, the online rental company launched a streaming-only service for our neighbors to the north. The new service will cost Canadian customers $7.99 per month—exactly one dollar less than we pay here in the U.S. However, that extra buck allows actual discs to be sent to your house. This is a nice little perk, considering how every title is not available for streaming.

During the interview, Hastings was asked about the price difference and the lack of a streaming-only option for U.S. customers. Here is how it went down:

The Hollywood Reporter: Are you concerned that American Netflix subscribers will look north and ask for the same discount Canadians get at $7.99?

Hastings: How much has it been your experience that Americans follow what happens in the world? It’s something we’ll monitor, but Americans are somewhat self-absorbed.

Yeah... he could have just said how there is no streaming-only option in the U.S., but they are looking into it. Instead, he saved that tidbit for his apology. If you read some of the comments that follow, people don’t seem very forgiving about his comment. However, this is one self-absorbed American that’s way too addicted to her Netflix account.

Also, I have to think that I’ve been called worse—and probably in retail situations. I’ve moved on. Did you or will you cancel your Netflix account based on this incident? Sound off in the comments section below.

I’m not self-obsorbed enough to be offended.

Why would I be offended?  a) he’s probably right, b) I don’t live my life looking for something to take offense at, c) I love Netflix and have had nothing but good value for many years as a subscriber.

NETFLIX PROVIDES A SERVICE THAT I AM HAPPY WITH AND WILL CONTINUE TO USE. RIGHT OR WRONG MR. HASTINGS HAS A RIGHT FOR HIS OPINION. I DO THINK THAT IT WOULD BE A REALLY BIG APOLOGY IF HE WOULD TREAT HIS OWN PEOPLE IN HIS NATIVE COUNTRY AS WELL AS HE DOES OTHER COUNTRIES.

Amazing that the myth of the “self-absorbed American” is still running rampant. When will the fools of the world realize that there are idiots in EVERY country, not just countries A, B and C? I know plenty—-and I mean plenty—-of ignorant foreigners, who don’t know world events, don’t know geography and have plenty of prejudices against people and places they’ve never been.

Oh, wait. I said “fools”. They’ll never realize anything of importance, and will simply continue to parrot…foolishness.

Well, he’s right you know.
Personally I would like a streaming only option, but have no problem with the extra $1USD for the privilege of occasionally using a disc.
