Denon Sells 5 Feet of Cable for $500
Sale or snake oil? Denon's cable prices are causing a stir -- and not in a good way.
Denon AK-DL1 Denon Link

Denon says that the AK-DL1 Denon Link will “bring out all the nuances in digital audio reproduction” from any of its DVD players with the Denon Link feature.

Got $500 in your piggybank? Crack that thing open and let’s get some cable!

Denon is currently hawking its AK-DL1 Denon Link cable. The product is sold in a 1.5-meter (59 inches) bundle, for the cool, completely insane price of $499.

The company says it’s made of high-purity copper wire and high-performance connection parts. It could have fairy dust and ground-up unicorn horns, but we don’t care. Denon says that the product was designed for the “audio enthusiast.” Network World says this description is “Denonese for ‘sucker.’” Ha!

Good cable does make a difference; there’s no denying that. We understand that cable is a hot—and sometimes extremely angry—topic. What price is your limit when it comes to hooking up your audio/video?

NEWS FLASH - U.S. Government buys 1000 sets of Dennon’s $500.00 5 ft cable - considers it as good a buy as the $300 Screw Driver and $400 Hammer!!!!

How about an 8 foot cable for 24 THOUSAND dollars!! Check it out.

We are all outraged, of course, and even feel sorry for anyone taken in by this stuff.  Isn’t there a way to make this illegal?  OK, I too, like less government, but can’t just a little bit of our taxes go to stop this sort of thing?

It’s so crazy.  With the exception of trying to pump 1000 real rms watts through extremely fine, NON-speaker wire, NO cables have practically EVER made a noticeable difference to a listener!

Even very very cheap cables have shields and low resistance, the only things that really matter.
PLEASE!

We used “off the shelf” (or off the spool) stock cables in every commercial broadcast studio I’ve ever been in or worked in over the past 30 years, whether for the video or audio or RF. Even the 6” dia. nitrogen pressurized transmission line connected to the output flange of a half-million dollar Gates transmitter didn’t cost this much (for an equivalent length). Clearly a fool and his money are soon parted. And to Denon: Shame, shame on you.

This nonsense really diminishes the Denon brand in my mind.  A company that would try to pull such a shameless scam as this cannot be trusted.

I think Denon just “jumped the shark.”

This sort of thing happens at a lower level too.  I recently bought a PS3 at a big ol’ store what begins with W.  The nice girl in that department tried to sell me a 50 buck SonyHDMI cable to go with it.  You need one cause those cheap a-holes at Sony don’t provide one in the box.  I told he I thought 60 was a lot for a cable.  She said she was pretty sure I had to use the Sony cable.  I thanked her, walked over about 3 aisles to the TV dept, and picked up the same length cable for 29 bucks.  This cable thing is mostly a lot of PT Barnum.  I think that’s why no snake-oil cable company has ever had the balls to do a double-blind listening test with a good size number of listeners.
