If you’re looking to get into the HD game fast and cheap, today’s deal should appeal.
The flat screen first: You get 42 inches of full 1080p resolution (1920 x 1080), a 900:1 contrast ratio, 8 ms response time, both ATSC and NTSC built-in tuners, plenty of inputs (2 HDMI), and a very generic looking case. The controls are located on the side of the set, which is becoming the norm for the space saving bezels, while the ports are scattered around the back on varying planes to assist with wall mounting.
The LC420SS8 gets decent reviews, considering it’s entry-level status. Biggest complaints seem to be uninspired blacks, which is typical of the cheaper LCDs. Another gripe, from some, is a high-pitched whine when powered off (that’s a new one!).
The NB501SL9 Blu-ray / DVD player can be bought separately for $350.00 and is one of the more bare bones units. It uses the 1.1 profile, has the picture-in-picture option, the usual cables in and out, Deep Color Control and Dolby Digital Plus.
Together you’d probably pay around $1,500.00 for the pair, so consider the Blu-ray player a freebie if that does it for you.
