No doubt, phase two of the Blu-ray adoption battle will be all about price, both hardware and titles. Speaking as someone who, for once, resisted a new technology I’ll be weighing the cost of ownership on a daily (if not hourly) basis. Today’s deal on Sharp’s BD-HP20U Blu-ray Player is an encouraging sign for us not-so-early adopters.

I suspect you’ve been fed the litany of Blu-ray benefits (HD DVD owners please cover you eyes), but for those under a rock: it’s 1080P (1920 x 1080), up to 40 Mbit/secs, seamless menus, incredible sound (Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio), 5-10X the capacity of regular DVDs, and has the potential for some cool interactivity and extras. Obviously, there’s more but I’ll leave that to the fanboys.

The BD-HP20U is compatible with a variety of formats including BD-ROM/RE/R, DVD Video, DVD-RW/R, DVD+RW/R, and audio CDs. It’ll up-convert your standard DVD to 1080p, and has the standard list of ports - Digital Coax, Digital Optical, Multichannel RCA, Component, HDMI, and S-Video(?!). Nice bonus: this player can also communicates with AQUOS TVs via Sharp’s AQUOS LINK function (through HDMI). This allows you to control those components with one remote, if you weren’t already.
