Philips MCD708 DVD Micro Theater Audio System

Finding the right bookshelf system can be tough. It probably (hopefully) won’t be your main set of speakers… more likely background entertainment for the office, den or other secondary-type room. Unfortunately(?) you’ve been spoiled by the bigger rigs and want a setup that that won’t embarrass on poker night. Your options get even thinner when you factor in the questionable design standards in the bookshelf category, not to mention your significant other’s consent.

Denon or Onkyo would be a great solution if price wasn’t a factor, but this is a deal article, so let’s move on. Originally priced at $250, and looking twice that with real rosewood speakers and a modern aluminum component chassis, Philip’s MCD708 Micro System has a lot to offer. In terms of sound, it has a Class “D” digital amp, Neodymium ribbon tweeters, 100 watts total power, a response bandwidth of 100 - 20000 Hz, virtual surround sound, 60 DB signal-to-noise ratio, and 4 digital sound control modes. It can also play the usual cd formats: WMA-CD, MP3-CD, CD, CD-R, CD-RW.

What puts this system on the same shelf, as it were, with the more pricey models, is that this box also runs DVDs, progressive scan no-less. That includes DivX, DVD+RW, DVD-Video, Picture CD, Video CD/SVCDs if you still have them. Hook the MCD708 to your playroom hdtv (component, no HDMI) and let the 12-bit/108MHz video DAC do it’s thing. Reviews give it a thumbs up on picture quality and versatility.
