Mitsubishi’s HC5500 1080p LCD projector
The Projector People are at it again, this time serving up some 1080p projection at a very attractive price.
The model is Mitsubishi’s HC5500 LCD projector, featuring full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080. ProjectorPeople.com has a nice $500 rebate that lowers the price to $1,995, and when you do the “click for our price” thing it gets dropped to $1,695—not a bad way to enter the 1080p projection fray.
Here are some other tasty specs for the HC5500:
Inputs include a pair of HDMI 1.3 ports, plus component, S-video, composite, and RS-232 serial input.
The projector weighs 12.3 pounds, and can produce an image 50 to 250 inches. The mail-in rebate offer is good through December 31, 2008, so you can go ahead and add it to the holiday shopping list.

I still think these things are overpriced considering they are now part of a mature technology. It seems like you could get better ‘closeout’ deals a few years ago when it must have been more expensive to produce home theatre projectors. For example, the Sanyo PLV z1 started at an MSP of 3M but during its sales history dropped to around $500 at B&H;. They better hurry up and get real again ‘cause with the economy crashing even us videophiliacs aren’t gonna be able to get moola out of our moms. Right now it’s hard to get a thousand to ‘waste’ as mom says and, who knows?, maybe she’s right.

I also agree with the above…These HD 1080p projectors shouldnt exceed a grand. I would get one now if the price was around a grand, but some of them costing as much as 8 grand+ is totally ridiculous.
