Tip of the day: if you like a good flame war click over to your local a/v forum (any will do) and post an opinion or two about speakers. You see, woofers, tweeters and even the wire that runs between are considered the most personal of home theater preferences and therefore, subject to a lot of senseless and colorful debate.
True, there are specs every prospective owner should know before buying speakers, and a little research goes a long way when it comes to choosing the right system (for you). However, I would caution anyone venturing into those threads to bring along a good dose of salt and base your speaker opinions on your ears and wallet.
That said, today’s deal comes from a well-respected speaker marquee - KEF Audio. Their 3000 line is based on their 50 years of building experience and from the reviews, it shows (and sounds). On the surface the 3005 set looks the part of a modern system. Inside, the specs seem very reasonable for an average guy (read: not loaded) home theater. The Bass reflex 2 way satellites deliver 70Hz - 55kHz frequency response, have a max output of 108dB, and impedance of 8Ω. The center channel has a 65Hz - 55kHz frequency response. Both (all) require at least 100W to get things moving and employ KEF’s Uni-Q driver technology to evenly disperse the sound throughout your room.
The globe-shaped 250W class D powered subwoofer has a requency response of 30Hz - 250Hz and a 10in. driver with matching passive bass radiator. It also touts a SmartBass™ ‘connect and go’ feature for simplicity of set up, though I’ve never found subs to be all that hard to wire in the first place.
Stands are available for this series, and nice looking ones at that.
