D-Link Switches Save Networking Energy
Green SOHO switches reduce power consumption by up to 73 percent.

D-Link, which introduced green network switches and routers that recognize when ports are inactive and adjust power accordingly, is at it again.

The company’s second-generation DGS-2205 5-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch provides up to 73 percent reduced power consumption when connected and powered down, says D-Link. The same device, when used for 10 hours and then powered down for 14 hours over a 24-hour period and connected via Ethernet cables, represents a 66 percent energy reduction.

Three more energy-saving switches will also be available this year.

D-Link says the devices benefit Home/SOHO users who don’t require perpetual use of their computers or the use of all the ports on their switches. The switch is also capable of altering power usage in relation to the length of its cable without any loss of performance. Normally, switches send full power to cables regardless of the actual length—and since the cable length used by Home/SOHO users is usually less than 20 meters, power consumption can be reduced significantly, the company says.

The switches are also RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) and WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) compliant.
