We’re used to seeing Crestron do a lot of home control, but they have plenty of AV love to go around as well. In fact, the company just started shipping the HD-XSPA, a 7.1-channel receiver.

However, Crestron says that the HD-XSPA isn’t just a receiver. It packs a surround sound processor, a multichannel amplifier, and a DigitalMedia room box under one chassis. That way, you can have 7.1 audio in a variety of configurations (7.1 in one room or 5.1 with the other two channels going to a second zone), but also integrated into a whole-house AV system—with support for 4K, of course.

The HD-XSPA is designed to connect directly to a DM switch, so you don’t need the extra DigitalMedia receiver in the room. Promising 140 watts per channel (@ 8 ohms), the HD-XSPA also has a powered sub-channel, in case you want to install an in-wall subwoofer.

Other features include RS-232, IR, Ethernet, and relay ports, for control of local devices. It also has CEC pass-through, so you can control devices through one of the unit’s four HDMI inputs. Besides support for 4K video, this component can also accommodate all of the latest audio formats, including Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.

“In designing the HD-XSPA, we’ve made life easier for integrators,” said Dennis Fink, Crestron’s technology manager for audio products. “Until today, they were forced to install both an AVR and a DM roombox in each room. Now they can deliver amazing 7.1 audio, with the full performance of a Class D power amp, with one compact component.”

At just 2U, the HD-XSPA saves space in the equipment rack and can integrate with other Crestron systems and AV equipment. The HD-XSPA is shipping now, with an MSRP of $5,500.
