FINALIST: Best Other Space

Tucked away in the Elochoman Valley area of Washington, the residence of this big-game hunter is a statement on all accounts, whether it’s his expeditions themselves, or the exhaustive research he takes preparing to go to exotic places around the world on safari.

The trophies in his collection can rival that of any museum, and the prized possessions needed care in showing off—and they’re in two rooms, the North American Game Room and African Game.

This homeowner spends countless hours researching his travel destinations, much by viewing DVDs, so a top-flight A/V setup would serve his practical and entertainment needs.

That’s when he hunted down Kelso, Wash.-based Charisma Productions to help outfit the safari rooms. “The African room was completed this year and featured a sound system that could fill a large open space,” says Charisma’s Johann Peters. “THX-certified installers Charisma Productions knew this meant it needed to meet a THX-certified specification for equipment.”

The combination of the Onkyo TX-NR906 THX Ultra II-certified AV receiver and full complement of Klipsch THX Ultra II speakers both in and out of wall hit the bull’s-eye.

THX certification is also accounted for by way of the 65-inch Runco PlasmaWall XP-65DHD, which offers pristine high-def images through the company’s Vivix processing. A Sony BDP-S550 and a Dish VIP 722 provided high-definition sources to the plasma screen.

Because the Elochoman River area is pretty remote, an APC battery backup unit got the call.  A Philips TSU-9600 provided enough control of the main system as well as the Russound A-Bus system at the other end of the room, and Lutron Grafik Eye lighting control serves up the dozens of lights that fill the massive room and highlight the trophies.

Topping off the safari rooms is detailed cabinetry from renowned Julian and Sons of Arkansas. The cabinets built specifically for this homeowner were milled from African Babinga and Paduke woods trimmed with African Ebony to give the room a true essence of Africa.

“Julian and Sons professional cabinet engineers worked carefully with Charisma Productions to build a well-ventilated cabinet system that fit to perfect specifications all of the equipment as well as excellent access to the equipment in the back,” says Peters, adding that, “Having never worked on such a unique project such as a Safari Room, we were surprised to learn in the course of the project that all the animals shot during the safaris had the meat donated to the local tribes.”

We won’t show you the room that’s fully covered by trophies, but here are some areas:
