Convergence and the Media Center PC
How Microsoft's Media Center is getting its due—as much more than a PC DVR.
Microsoft Media Center
Microsoft’s Media Center interface isn’t just for computers anymore. Exceptional Innovation’s Lifeware system, for one, uses Media Center in its whole-house control solutions, and Microsoft’s Xbox game platform can be used as a Media Center Extender.

Media Center Extenders from D-Link and Linksys are due out in the first quarter. How much room is there for differentiation in a Media Center Extender? Not a whole lot, which is why Linksys is combining a DVD player with its high-end model. The Extender-only model will have a suggested retail price of $299, and the extender with an upscaling DVD player will list for $349.

The D-Link DSM-750 is expected to sell for $299 as well. D-Link’s differentiators include a front-loading USB port that allows you to play back music and photos directly through the device. The product is also compatible with ActiveTV, a service that works with AMD-based computers to format Internet media content for TV playback.

And yet Vista still has NO built in codecs/support for either HD DVD or Blu-ray. This is a major “hole” in the offering, IMO. I know you can add third party software to do the task, but why would the flagship product from Microsoft not offer any native support for HD?
