Interesting, but apparently not new, as the article itself is basically discussing the existing tech used in the Samsung LED rptvs, which have not done terribly well. I do agree with the above poster, and would add, that this technology does not get rid of the silk screen effect inherent in rptv, which is the reason I ultimately opted for a flat panel LCD instead of the Samsung LED rptv (which space-wise would have worked find in my cabinet).
I do look forward to the use of these in front projectors, but wonder whether the elimination of the color wheel elminates not only rainbows but also dither? I do not even know if it is the wheel that causes dither, I just know that I do not like dither, and in my eternal quest for the perfect display, dither must be eliminated.

Big and boxy and it looks ten times better than LCD and or even crappier plasma. I have seen nothing that compares to my 65” 1080i RPTV. I prefer my blacks to be black not ditigal gray. I would love to see this tech in a front DLP projector. The detail my set produces blows away grainy LCD and Plasma. Remember size is everything…...
OMG. Bring on Phlatlight in front projection!!!!
The current bulbs low running time (2000-3000 hours) high replacement costs and extreme heat have been very valid reasons not to go FP yet.
I will be watching for this technology big time!! :-)
Imagine a 60,000 hour 1080p projector the size of a lunch box with NO FAN putting out a 110 inch image!!!!
I bought one of these Samsung PhlatLight RPTVs, and it is the single best image I’ve ever seen. It is like looking through a window. If you have the space for an RPTV, this is the set to get.
RP is not going anywhere any time soon. The picture size and most importantly the COST is going to keep it alive.
Bigger image great picture at half the cost of flat panels. My money is on this tech!
Does anyone know when a front projector using a Phlatlight PT120 chipset (as demonstrated by a prototype at the SID 2008) will come to market? Which companies are working on production models? I’m very keen to get one myself, as soon as it is out. I’ve been following LED projectors for a while, but this is the leap forward that will make them much more interesting to a wider audience…
It seems like we’re not too far from seeing LED DLP home theater front projectors on sale. According to the press release by Luminous (link below) they are displaying another prototype with TI at the InfoComm in Las Vegas right now. Apparently we will see them coming to market before the end of the year.
I wonder what price level they will come in at and what brightness they will be able to achieve.
WOW, thanks for the info/link Andy.
This is great news for all!
My only concern with front projection was the low lamp life and heat. I cant wait to see these hit the market. It might bring FP to the mass market for the first time (one the price is right).
The main article also says the rainbow effect that DLP has will be eliminated from Phlatlighs. I hope this is true as I always prefered LCD for this reason and it looks like TI might have a monopoly over phlatlight for DLP only.
LCD FP’s dont require as bright a lamp as DLP so you would think this technology would be great for LCD/Lcos too (maybe better). We shall see…..
Just found this here - may be of interest:

Hoping that we’ll know more about price and availability after the IFA and CEDIA shows. By then we may also see other producers introducing their 1080p LED DLP projectors… who knows?
Can’t wait to see one in person…
This JVC projector offers more onscreen pixels than most, and a THX mode.
DPI, Sunfire and SnapAV deliver high performance at a reasonable price.
Sayonara, set-top box? Or will it just take an energy-saving nap?
It’s hard to imagine life without remote controls, but it’s been a long, strange path to the modern incarnation we know and love today.
LED Light engines for DLP Rear projection.
Nice tech, but RP is dead and everyone else knows it. If you really want to see a smokin’ LED powered display, look at an LED-backlit LCD!
All RP sets are big, and they have that lovely fog around all bright objects, due to light spill and scatter in the projection box. DLP makes nice projectors, but the days of the big boxy RP sets are over.
