California is run by inept politicians and we are broke,I say we hook these windbag legislators up to generators to produce electricity.
Energy Star certification is a joke. It’s too easy to get, and doesn’t cover energy usage while the product is in use, only when it’s off.
Energy Star III on the other hand would be a much more green alternative, as it’s a much broader specification that also covers the unit while in operation.
As you might expect, Energy Star III does favor LCD tv’s over plasmas as they generally consume less energy, but there are still a few plasma’s that meet the Energy Star III requirements.
Here’s the link to the Energystar website that covers the new specifications:

I guess internet TV retailers will be happy with this as I expect business will boom if this regulation gets approved. Does anyone honestly believe no one in California will buy a TV over 40 inches?
The other major winner is the projector industry.
This global warming B.S. has got to stop.
It’s a hoax to help eatablish another avenue for tax revenue. People wake up and vote these idiots out of office.
If we build more nuclear reactors we could have all the electricity we need, and no greenhouse gasses.
If we don’t even have enough power for these TVs, then how are we going to charge all the electric cars these weenies want us to drive?
The earth is cooling now so all the global warming/ greenhouse gas fears are B.S. anyways.
I can see it now if it gets approved….
Californians will be buying bigscreens in Nevada and smuggling them back in.When they get to the border the ag. person will ask “do you have any fruits, vegetables or bigscreen tv’s?”.
When are we just going to kick California out of the union and stop letting them drag the rest of the country down? Those hippies need to put down the doobie and get back to reality! Their logic is so bad regarding this, when it is NOT that simple, but, it is California we are talking about. Land of fruits and nuts, and this “commission” is proving the nuts part loud and clear.
What is an “emmision”?
Is that anything like an emission?
At least Paul has some brains. For the rest of you, California has led the country in areas like clean air, and moving to renewable energy. We may be a bunch of left wing fruits and nuts….but we have one of the largest economies in the world. Something right is being done here.
Is this particular rulling going to pass or make sense? I don’t believe in either. But certainly moving us to not build TVs that just pour energy down the drain is the only way to go.
Further, CA hosts silicon valley….guess where most of all your technology is rooted in. Guess what, the same respect for education and science that brings you everything from silicon logic to airplanes in the sky, to the magic of an iPhone, and CAT scanners….happens to define that Global Warming is real. It is no longer a subject of obfuscation except by the Oil lobbyists.
So unless you think we are too late on Global Warming and we are doomed anyway….then you might pull your heads out of your backside and get with the program. Nuclear would be great….but before they are built the cost overruns are in the $500m to $1B range. The industry is faltering before it restarts. Solar and Wind and biomass are key here.
lol @ boot california. I think you should drop us too. Lets see how this state fares alone compared to the other 49 states. CA would have a GNP higher than many countries. So 1 state is trying to force every industry it can to create more energy efficient products and you say thats a bad thing. Personally i believe we need more nuclear power as this country wants to keep growing without building the supporting structure for the increase in needs. But reducing the energy consumption of electronic goods is still a good idea.
” Something right is being done here.”
Huh? Do you live in CA? Highest sales tax. Highest car tax. Highest income tax. That is of all 50 states. And even with these new taxes the state is still on theverge of financial collapse.
It’s these damn tree huggers that are running this state into the ground! With the extreme financial problems this state has I think the legislature has far bigger problems to solve then to further discourage business investement in California.
“Boot California out of the union???” LOL.
We’d be much better off, actually, if we had let the South secede instead. They’re the ones really holding us back, with their hillbilly ways. ;)
Well this is just stupid…although maybe well intended. It will never come to pass. My 52” LCD can run on as little as 105 watts while my old CRT used about 110 watts. Granted I typically use a brighter setting that uses more power, but newer TVs that use LEDs may decrease the amount of power used. If they are going to restrict TVs, then at least do it based upon size…say Xwatts/inch or something similar. Better yet, just increase gas mileage by 1 mpg.
This has been floating about with enviromentalists for some time now. But only after the fact that these products are becoming more affordable to the masses. Older big screens are a lot less efficient than the newer models, yet there was no call to ban them 5 or more years ago. Oh, maybe because only high income earners could afford them then and not the common folk.
Enviromentalism is just another form of class warfare. Only people who live in homes that use more energy than a third world village can afford to pay for carbon credits. Everyone else will have to cut back.
No, global warming has stopped and it is cooling now. It is just a natural phase of climate, if it never warmed up we would still be in an Ice Age.
I live in California, plans to build Solar farms in our desert areas may be held up because some left wing nuts are worried we will lose our pristine desert.
California is doing its best to chase bussiness out of this state and the State has a huge 42 billion dollar budget deficit.
I read the article from the OCregister on this topic , and they are saying it ‘could’ take about 25% of the tv’s 40 inches or larger off the market, as of this moment.
In other words, manufacturers will keep reducing their tv’s power usage, and at the end of the day, California will still be able to buy any size tv they want within the new guidelines.
Sensationalist journalism at it’s finest. All California is really doing is mandating energy saving features on televisions. There are already a bunch of 50 inches or larger models that meet the ‘new’ standards already, and they can’t do anything about a tv you already own.
This is for Pro CA…...Say you open a business one day, and in a few years you make it big. Then the government comes in and says you have to start running your business their way. You’re going to lose a lot of money, investors, and youre going to cut a ton of jobs too and there is not a damn thing you can do to stop it. Thats been happening on a large scale in Europe for years. Its been happening in places like California and Michigan more recently and look what its doing. At some point the government decided it wants more control over you. But the government knew it could not have it without a go ahead from the people. So then the government fabricated the notion of global warming to scare you into letting the government do the unthinkable. Now idiots right here in the USA think its ok for the government to take over private businesses. All the while a few people who planned this out are waiting to make billions in the “Cap and Trade” program tthat may result from all of this. Do some research. The world is not warming up.
“It will never come to pass.” Oh yes it can. Can’t you see the socialism in all of this? They want total control over you - what you eat, how you run your business, what health care you are rationed, and yes how much energy & what kind you are ‘allowed’ to have…and the topper, how much you will pay & be punished for abusing these laws. Cap & trade..another one of Obama’s disastrous plans for us, he even took part in the creation of the market for it. I AM SICK TO MY STOMACH OF ALL THIS!
Now I’m going home to fire up my HUGE plasma & enjoy a nice tall brew…that makes the socialists squirm. Liberty, nothing better than that.
Tony, one year (2007) isn’t indicative of anything. Neither is two, three, or even five.
This JVC projector offers more onscreen pixels than most, and a THX mode.
DPI, Sunfire and SnapAV deliver high performance at a reasonable price.
Sayonara, set-top box? Or will it just take an energy-saving nap?
It’s hard to imagine life without remote controls, but it’s been a long, strange path to the modern incarnation we know and love today.
Well…that’s left coast politics for ya.
