The HD DVD promo group issued the lamest of responses to this news. I think they are finally giving up.
I wonder what Dimitri has to say about all of this… Does he hear the champagne corks popping yet?
I am still hoping this format war will go the way of SACD and HD-Audio discs.
The best article I have seen on the current status of the format war is over at TG Daily.
Best Buy believes that bluray is the best format for consumers. The fact that they make more profit on the sale of their cheapest bluray player than the average HDDVD player costs, has nothing to do with it.
best buy is just another company SONY BOUGHT OFF!! WHO CARES WHAT BESTBUY SAY’S OR DOES, YOU CAN BUY THE EXACT SAME THING AT AMAZOM.COM ALOT CHEAPER!! ANYWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah that’s it - Sony pays everyone to sell their product! They don’t want to make a profit or anything?
Lets see, Sony makes the movies, and the gross receipts at the box office, then they make the overpriced bluray player you need to watch the movies, then they make the overpriced 1080p display you watch the movies on. Luckily the price of their tv’s are about double everyone elses and that’s where they are making their profit.
Blu-ray is not even a full developed product. I constantly get blu-ray disk that require firmware update to te Blu-ray player. Guest, that are visiting can not belive what a PITA the updates are. They would just give up and return the movie. Never had one problem with HD-DVD!
I havn’t had a problem with any movie and I was an early adopter with one of the first Blu-ray players out. Havn’t heard of anyone else having this problem either. Do you have a Blu-ray player Mr. Powers? Or, are you just making up s#%) because you are upset after buying into HD-DVD and now Toshiba is dropping it?
As a business analyst, I don’t see any reason why Sony or any other Blu-ray company would pay anyone to exclude HD-DVD when all indications were that HD-DVD was dying (even before the Toshiba announcement). It is more understandable that they just sit back and watch HD-DVD die when it hit the downslope after Warner’s announcement.
best buy JUST GET MONEY FROM SONI THAT WHY!!! I KNO IT. SONY IS EVIL. I CAN GO AMAZOM LIKE TIM SAY.
YEAH!! SONY DOUBL PRISE AND NOT FUL DEVELOPD PRODUCT. BUT I EAT PITA CHIPS.
Yep, Darla. I haven’t had any problems with Blu-Ray either. All the posts by people like Powers are the exact reason I decided to pick Blu-Ray over HD-DVD. Blu-Ray is technically superior, but I was buying both initially anyway. Seeing all the bologna propaganda being posted by people on the HD-DVD side made me decide to switch to the Blu-Ray side permanently…
I made a good choice 16 years ago to get a vhs player, i get all my movies free from the library to boot. I knew all this new fangle stuff was a set up tp get my money. ‘Tween the revenuers and the comapnies they are both out to clean us out. I just wish my tapes would stop gittin a tangled up.
Careful ray!
Don’t hang yourself in all that loose tape. :D
Darla and Jeff
I have had a Blu-ray player for about a year and yes I had 3 Blu-ray disks that required a firmware update to play. The last update was for blu-ray java 1.1.
Sony is releaseing the blu-ray requirments in what they call Profiles. They started with a grace period profile called 1.0. The have two additional profile 1.1 and 2.0. sorry to say that this is not “bologna propaganda”.

Even sony is releasing firmware to support profile update to the PS3. see the blob entry by PlayStation Network Operations:

Powers, you don’t know what I was referring to as propaganda…
I’m well aware that players need updates for some new (not necessarily useful) features.
This JVC projector offers more onscreen pixels than most, and a THX mode.
DPI, Sunfire and SnapAV deliver high performance at a reasonable price.
Sayonara, set-top box? Or will it just take an energy-saving nap?
It’s hard to imagine life without remote controls, but it’s been a long, strange path to the modern incarnation we know and love today.
LOL @ HD DVD, AGAIN!
