Expect the good people at Columbia House to be stuffing your mailbox very soon.
The company isn’t trying to send gentle reminders that you still need to buy five cassette tapes at their regular prices. Instead, Direct Brands wants you to know that their Columbia House brand has entered the 21st century, and is now offering Blu-ray discs.
“We are extremely dedicated to the future of DVD collections, so much so that we created a new Blu-ray specific club which will provide consumers dedicated to this format with all of the advantages of our club membership,” says Deborah Fine, president and CEO of Direct Brands Inc.
What are those advantages exactly? Well, you don’t have to get up off your lazy butt to get Blu-rays. That’s something.
The company is currently running a “Red, White and Blu-ray” promotion, where you can snag two Blu-rays for just $5.99 each. Supposedly, it’s just for July, but something tells us that they will offer the same type of deal well after the last pop of fireworks.
If you do decide to sign up, make sure you read that fine print. By accepting the bargains, you’ll start getting mailings, and if you don’t return them in the allotted time, Blu-rays will show up at your house—and you’ll have to actually pay for them. Also, you’ll be locked into another three titles over the next year, which sell for “as low as $19.95.” That means they could go as high as what? Expect to add taxes, shipping and a male child on top of that before you can cancel.
