Colorful Theater, Artwork-Hidden TVs Transform Home Viewing
The completion of this new-construction home featured installation of robust Control4 automation, hidden TV tricks and a purple media room.

This home was already billed as a nice, high-end development model when the homeowners bought it while it was about 75 percent built. The last 25 percent may have been the most important to these homeowners, though, as it transformed the place into their high-tech dream house.

Custom electronics firm Phoenix Unequaled Home Entertainment of Memphis, Tenn., worked with the builder and owners to bring the job and their requests to fruition, complete with automation, hidden TV tricks, home theater and ultimate lighting controls.

“Phoenix had provided the initial infrastructure through the builder, who is a normal client of ours. During our initial meeting it was evident the owners wanted an intelligent home,” says Phoenix president Scott Fuelling. “Lighting control, HVAC management, advanced audio/video distribution, motorized shading, a custom lift mechanism for the home office television, a media room and advanced security system upgrades were discussed in great detail. The owners indicated a desire to simplify their lifestyle through the application of technology.”

Fingertip controls of just about every function in the house is definitely what we’d call simplified. A Control4 whole-house automation system ties everything together, with uniform operation at all locations throughout, and Control4’s interface easily navigated on TV screens and other control devices.

“The retrofit capabilities of the system allowed the entire home’s lighting to be controlled without the need for demolition or advanced electrical work,” says Fuelling. “Specific scenes, macros and functions were prepared and programmed into the system. The homeowners especially liked the ability of scene selection from dimmer/switches, eliminating the need for additional keypads or wall clutter.”

All of that lighting isn’t the only visual appeal in the place. TVs in the breakfast nook and family room stay hidden behind motorized artwork until called upon (see images below), while another TV pops up in the home office from a custom lift mechanism (while the background window shades automatically go down for better viewing).

The owners’ interior designer helped coordinate the shading solutions throughout, which feature Lutron Sivoia motorized systems, as well as the design and layout of the eye-popping purple theater room that features Runco projection and a Stewart Filmscreen screen, with in-wall speakers painted to match.

“Through the use of WiFi touch screens and controllers, inaccessible areas of the home that were retasked by the clients were easily incorporated into the overall scope of the project,” adds Fuelling, with those devices providing even more fuel to stoke the owners’ high-tech fire.
