Known for their home networking solutions, it was a natural migration for Cisco and Linksys to extend into the distributed audio market.
Cisco did that at CES this year when it made a splash with the Linksys by Cisco Media Hub and Wireless Home Audio solutions that bridge the networking capabilities with your digital music collections.
Now it looks like Cisco could be eyeing video solutions, too. The company announced today that it intends to acquire Pure Digital Technologies, which makes the Flip Video brand among its mass-market video products.
“The acquisition of Pure Digital is key to Cisco’s strategy to expand our momentum in the media-enabled home and to capture the consumer market transition to visual networking,” said Ned Hooper, senior vice president of Cisco’s Corporate Development and Consumer Groups. “Pure Digital has revolutionized the way people capture and share video with Flip Video. This acquisition will take Cisco’s consumer business to the next level as the company develops new video capabilities and drives the next generation of entertainment and communication experiences.”
Flip Video is big into making digital video capture, transfer and editing easy for the mainstream, and its software allows for convenient linking to sites like YouTube and MySpace.
We’re guessing that with the Linksys Media Hub, it’ll be pretty easy to share your digital video collection around the house, too, so you can tap into it on a big-screen TV or pull it up, and upload it, remotely from the Media Hub web portal. We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for more on the fruits of this acquisition.
