Get ready to give those DACs a workout and feel like a concert’s going on right in your listening room.

We know the name Chesky is synonymous with audiophile-quality recordings in the audio world, but this is getting out of hand. While you can try out the merits of 96-kHz/24-bit recordings yourself on the Cheskys’ digital download site HDtracks, you can take it another step further on the Chesky Records’ website these days.

The record label is serving up one-to-one copies of its 192-kHz/24-bit audio master disc recordings. How’s that for high-resolution audio!

On the downside, there are only five recordings currently being offered in the format, and they’re $45 bucks a pop. On the upside, you’d be hard-pressed to find anything in your music collection that sounds so pure and good.

But you’ll need to play the music with your computer as the source—the discs come as Gold Studio Master DVD-Rs filled with WAV files, so they’re not going to work on your CD player, SACD player or DVD-A player. Hence the role of your digital-to-analog converter that can also handle the 192/24 bit rate depth. You may want to check with David or Norman Chesky about whether the discs will play in a regular DVD player or Blu-ray player that plays DVD-Rs.

The releases are:

  • Monty Alexander - Calypso Blues: Monty Alexander Plays Nat King Cole
  • Monty Alexander - The Good Life: The Music of Tony Bennett
  • White, Williams, Colligan, Wilson - Hancock Island: The Music of Herbie Hancock
  • Larry Coryell Organ Trio - Impressions
  • Sam Yahel, Mike Moreno, Ari Hoenig, Seamus Blake - The Jazz Side of the Moon (yup, you guessed what that one’s about)

So after you’ve bought one of these discs, ripped the files to your hard drive and piped ‘em to your audiophile rig, let us know how they sound.
