CEDIA Installer Q & A: Johnny Mota, Vsys Automation
What does this CE Pro want most at CEDIA?
September 08, 2011 by Grant Clauser

Today at CEDIA Expo in Indianapolis, I ran into audio/video and automation installer Johnny Mota of Vsys Automation (locations in Healdsburg, CA and Guadalajara, Mexico). I took this opportunity to pick his brain about what he thinks is hot this week at the biggest expo for the high-end home theater, audio and control industry.

Did you come to CEDIA 2011 looking for any specific products or technologies?

I was looking for more solutions for distributed audio. I heard there was going to be a good alternative to Sonos from NuVo. It looks really promising, and then I found out it works with Android, so I was excited.

Just overall I go to see who’s doing what. I expected to see everything in the “cloud” this year, but I’ve walked the floor (not all of it), and I haven’t seen too much of that.

Do your clients understand the concept of “cloud” content or do you have to explain the benefits to them?

Some of them do get it, but for the most part they don’t understand it or the benefits. There’s still a learning curve on what the “cloud” means to people.

Are you seeing anything interesting in displays?

I’m still excited to see the new Elite line from Pioneer [and Sharp]. There’s a lot of 4K technology out there, but we’ll see if that’s just a hype thing because there’s no content yet.  We’ll wait and see.

Is there a type of product you haven’t seen, but you’d like to? A problem solver?

What do you primarily come to CEDIA for?

To see the new technologies, to make connections, to see the improvements on products, what’s thinner, lighter, faster… especially looking at lighting control. We do a lot of that.

What do your clients generally know about lighting control?

For a lot of our high-end residential clients, they already have lighting control and they want to expand it or put it in their new house.
