We’ve been hearing plenty about 3D this year, but not necessarily seeing much about it.

September 10-12, 2010, will be your chance to play catch up—whether it’s checking out TVs for shopping purposes or just to check out the hype behind the 3D technology in the home. That’s when National 3D Demo Days will take place, thanks to collaboration from the Consumer Electronics Association, ESPN, AT&T, Comcast, DirecTV and your local retailers.

I, for one, hope that the retailers and their sales associates put together a bit more comprehensive and engaging presentation than what I saw at Best Buy a couple of weeks ago. The viewing of Monsters vs. Aliens was good, but an Ohio State-USC football game had no glasses and no one near it to present a demo.

On that note, sports will play a major role in National 3D Demo Days. The CEA reports that 64 percent of sales associates and shoppers want to see sports in 3D, so with ESPN 3D programming, retailers will be demoing a variety of sports that weekend, highlighted by a live telecast of Top 25 football match up Miami vs. Ohio State, on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 3:40 p.m. EST (the teams haven’t met since Ohio State stunned the Hurricanes back in the 2002 BCS championship).

More sports coverage throughout the weekend from ESPN will include: presentations from its FIFA World Cup airings this summer, X Games 16, a Boise State-Virginia Tech football game slated to air Sept. 6, and a Harlem Globetrotters event.

“Bringing ESPN 3D to retailers across the country is a great step forward for the rollout of 3D,” said Bryan Burns, vice president, ESPN business strategy and development and member of the CEA Board of Industry Leaders. “We know that when sports fans see how the action looks in 3D, they will seriously consider upgrading to 3D and working with AT&T U-verse TV, Comcast, DIRECTV and other content providers to bring the 3D experience to their living rooms.”
