Summer’s not technically over, but at least we’re past the dog days months of July and August, where the new Blu-ray release pickings got really slim.
September’s roaring in like a lion, to say the least. Home theater buffs’ testosterone levels will be raised quite a bit this week as heavy-hitting Oscar winners Braveheart and Gladiator make their debuts.
The flicks come courtesy of Paramount and the studio’s “Sapphire” effort that it is polishing on its most worthy Blu-ray releases. Look for plenty of extras to go along with these discs, while the movies themselves are sure to be a treat in full 1080p high-def, original 2.39:1 aspect ratio and uncompressed audio formats (TrueHD for Braveheart, DTS-HD Master Audio for Gladiator). And we can check a couple off our list of ‘10 Movies that Belong on Blu-ray’ from last December that’s slowly becoming reality.
A much different take on battle and war also hits Blu-ray this week, as Robert Altman’s classic comedy M*A*S*H makes its debut in the format. The movie that spawned one of the most popular TV series of all-time is just as wickedly funny, albeit for only a couple of hours instead of a decade’s worth of material. It, too, is in native super-wide 2.40:1 aspect ratio, with DTS-HD audio.
If you’re more into the TV thing, you can catch up on a season’s worth of episodes from the original CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (Ninth Season) and Heroes (Third). They’re among the best-looking high-def programming on broadcast networks, and are bound to be sweet in full 1080p.
Here’s the full release schedule for today, courtesy of Blu-ray.com:
