For the last few months we’ve been giving you a glimpse of what’s to arrive on Blu-ray format, highlight the entire month. Even though the summer certainly has been less than stellar, we’ve decided to take things week by week.
For today’s August 4 releases, there aren’t a whole lot of gems, especially newer hits. Disney and DreamWorks offer perhaps the most appealing new movies, with Race to Witch Mountain and The Soloist, respectively. Both are in the super-wide 2.39:1 aspect ratio, so ‘scope theater buffs should be pleased, and The Soloist features the always-solid Robert Downey Jr.
Among older titles, the hidden jewel might be John Carpenter’s 1986 offering, Big Trouble in Little China, with Kurt Russell and Kim Cattrall. It’s sure to keep you on your toes, and features 2.40:1 aspect ratio and DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.
There are also a couple of Oscar-worthy performances in this week’s releases, with My Cousin Vinny and Sling Blade. Marisa Tomei stole the hearts of the Academy voters with her performance in My Cousin Vinny, while Billy Bob Thornton may have peaked with his incredible all-around effort in the production and performance in Sling Blade.
Here’s the full schedule, from Blu-ray.com:

This JVC projector offers more onscreen pixels than most, and a THX mode.
DPI, Sunfire and SnapAV deliver high performance at a reasonable price.
Sayonara, set-top box? Or will it just take an energy-saving nap?
It’s hard to imagine life without remote controls, but it’s been a long, strange path to the modern incarnation we know and love today.
I was watching an HD movie copy of the old film Zulu in the store the other day. I’m still amazed at how they can restore even such old movies to 1080 quality!
