Blockbuster Plans Streaming Set-Top
No lines, no late fees -- just another box for your overcrowded A/V cabinet.
April 11, 2008 | by Rachel Cericola

Apple TV and VUDU will soon have some company.

The Hollywood Reporter says that Blockbuster wants to start streaming content to its own set-top box.

This will allow the rental chain to put its recent acquisition of Movielink to work; the online service provides over 6,000 major studio movies over the Internet.

Netflix just announced its own plans for a similar service, with LG making the boxes.

Will this be the next wave, or just another box to crowd up your audio/video cabinet? We shall soon see.

Without knowing all the details, which one would you be most likely to buy? Assuming one box doesn’t have super specs or super-cheap prices, I think I’d go with Netflix just on my previous experience.

Blockbuster is expected to make an official announcement this month.

I would go with BlockBuster.  I once cancelled a
NetFlix account by e-mail, and they kept billing my
credit card.  They come in second only to identity theives in the trouble to get rid of if you have any
problems or change your mind.

Bad idea.  Movie link was never successful and will be buried by Vudu and Apple.  Blockbuster is going bankrupt even before the deal.  I think a far better idea would be for Blockbuster to co-market Vudu as its download arm and share the profits.  Blockbusteer is a company with stores and no engineers and will neveer be able to compete.  A deal with Vudu would give them a first class download product with the best engineering and better performance in that space. It might also save the company.  Why would BB go with with a loser in Movie Link?
