CD sales are sucking wind, while digital downloads are keeping overall music sales afloat these days. But as we noted earlier this week, there’s some newfound life in vinyl records.
With a Mickey Rourke-style comeback, the vinyl industry grew 89 percent last year, and saw about 670,000 sales through mid-April this year. So it makes at least a little bit of sense that mega retailer Best Buy is hopping on the vinyl bandwagon and making some room on the shelves for those lovable discs.
Best Buy has been testing vinyl sales at 100 stores across the country, and considering expanding the rollout to all 1,000-plus stores, according to the New York Post.
Your local independent record shop probably isn’t quaking in its audiophile boots just yet, though. Don’t look for dollar bins of precious used records at Best Buy—in fact, the latest 180-gram specials will probably cost you more than the CD version of the same album.
Look for Best Buy to carry about 200 vinyl choices within the 8-square-foot of retail space it’ll occupy. That’s a bit less than the 8,000 or so CDs you can still find there, but a step in the right direction if you still love spinning records. Now finding a good turntable demo—or audio demo of any kind—at Best Buy’s another story, but hopefully the records themselves will have more staying power on the retail shelf than other audiophile formats like SACD and DVD-A did.
