More companies are jumping on the home automation bandwagon—and we couldn’t be more thrilled. Now, Belkin is introducing an easy way to add control into the home, via its WeMo line.
The newly launched WeMo is a line of modular, Wi-Fi-based products that can turn your iOS device of choice into a remote control for a variety of household devices.
At launch, the WeMo line will feature two products: the WeMo Switch and the WeMo Motion. Both work with the free WeMo app.
The WeMo Switch is the main building block for WeMo, but couldn’t be more simple. Just plug it into an outlet, connect it to your home’s WiFi network, and any device that’s plugged into it can be controlled through the app—even when you’re out of the house. It also allows for timers, so you can set devices to go on and/or off at preset times.
The WeMo Switch + Motion adds in a motion sensor, which can tap into movement up to 10 feet away. Having that option means you can turn whatever is plugged in both on and off, based on motion.
Belkin has also included the option for IFTTT, an online service that allows you to create tasks combining different Internet-based services from one platform. For instance, users can have the Switch or Motion devices trigger items such as email, phone calls, Facebook, and more.
“WeMo uses familiar technology to create a plug-and-play solution for controlling gadgets and appliances remotely,” said Jamie Elgie, senior director of product management for Belkin. “Designed to address simple automation needs without the hassle or expense of whole home automation, WeMo is an easy and fun way to put your home at your fingertips.”
The WeMo Switch is shipping now for $49.99, with the WeMo Switch + Motion package going for $99.99. Find out more in the video walk-through below.
