This theater project faced some difficulties, mainly in the limited amount of time the homeowners could meet with custom electronics pro Audio Video Concepts and solidify the plans.

For one thing, part of those plans included scrapping the original basement plan for a theater brought by the builder. The plan didn’t meet the homeowners’ vision of what they wanted their theater room to be, says Audio Video Concepts’ Rob Roessler, so they found a different location in the basement and began reworking the builder’s plan. That included moving a bathroom and closet to accommodate seating for 10.

“The homeowners found inspiration from our showroom, but our design team still wanted to make it unique,” says Roessler. “So, while the design needed to incorporate a classic color scheme with curtains to disguise the screen and arched woodwork to frame lighting and add detail, the room would still be very much custom tailored for a busy family.”

The Audio Video Concept team compiled 3D renderings and virtual walkthroughs of the room and exchanged these ideas via email until a decision had been reached, says Roessler. After the design plan was complete, theater room construction started. The result includes high-performance items like a Runco projector and Stewart Filmscreen screen for the video, while a Yamaha receiver and 7.2 surround-sound system featuring Paradigm speakers dole out the audio.

“A Crestron touchscreen controls all the A/V equipment, room lighting, and motorized curtain at the front of the room where the screen was located. Walls of the room were acoustically treated and custom curves and arches resonated throughout room. An A/V rack was neatly organized and flushed into wall to hide the equipment,” notes Roessler. “But, the most important aspect of this design and installation was getting a busy husband and wife to sit down during the week to enjoy movies with their family.”
