Automated Home for Lou Gehrig Sufferer Opens (and Uses) Eyes
An automated home designed by South Carolina-based company SETNET caters to those with Lou Gehrig’s disease.

SETNET, Inc., a home automation dealer/installer in South Carolina, has drawn national attention for a home automation system designed specifically for people suffering from Lou Gehrig’s disease. Company president Tony Stewart undertook the project to meet the automation needs of a friend who came down with the disease. In addition to winning a Mark of Excellence award from the Consumer Electronics Association, the company has pushed the limits of what is possible in the automated home.

Currently the occupant of the home is restricted by the disease to such a degree that he must use his feet to control the automated functions of his SETNET-powered home. This includes changing channels, adjusting temperature, and controlling lighting and security. As Lou Gehrig’s will eventually rob him of even this ability, the system will be updated to enable him to use eye movements to control the home’s functions. Truly remarkable.

My heart is warmed to see HA technology empowering one who might otherwise feel helpless. I often think that home control exists for our convenience; this story is a humble reminder that it exists also that some less fortunate might carry on with their lives as they see fit, regardless of the weight resting on their shoulders. Well done, SETNET.
