AURALiC is working on bringing better digital music to the masses—and without wires.
The company just announced AURALiC Lightning Streaming, a new high-resolution streaming solution.
Promising audiophile-quality, whole-house music without the wired mess, Lightning is based on the company’s proprietary Telsa hardware platform. That boasts a 25,000 MIPS calculating capability, as opposed to the 1,000 MIPS for AURALiC’s previous platform, known as Sanctuary.
Other features include a quad-core ARM Coretex-A9 processor running at 1GHz, as well as 2GB DDR3 onboard memory and a dual-band 802.11ac Gigabit Wi-Fi infrastructure.
It’s worth nothing that Lightning can support Direct Stream Digital (DSD), double-rate DSD and Digital eXtreme Definition (DXD) wirelessly. It also allows digital audio signals to output though a USB host port to DACs, like AURALiC’s VEGA Digital Audio Processor. According to AURALiC, the system’s USB output can do PCM in sampling rates from 44.1 to 384 KHz at 16-, 24- and 32-bit resolutions. It also supports DSD, double-rate DSD and DXD at 2.8224 and 5.6448 MHz rates, as well as AAC, AIFF, ALAC, APE, DIFF, DSF, FLAC, MP3, OGG, WAV, WV and WMA formats.
Boasting the same OpenHome structure used by UK manufacturer Linn, the Lightning can even stream music from Songcast. It also has its own app for Apple iOS, Android, Windows PC, Mac OS X and Linux devices.
AURALiC plans to release the first Lightning product in May 2014. Known as Aries, the device can serve as a bridge between network-stored music and DACs. It includes a switchable USB host output, as well as digital AES/EBU, coaxial, and Toslink connections. It also comes with a Femto Master Clock and an MSRP of $999.
