Apple’s new iPhone sells for $199 to $299, with a 2-year AT&T contract.
People thought Apple was crazy for releasing another iPhone. Well, who is the crazy one now?
Possibly still Apple. However, the company just announced that they have sold 1 million iPhone 3Gs in the first three days.
“iPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “It took 74 days to sell the first one million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world.”
The unit certainly is global, selling in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and the US. It will hit France later this week.
It’s possible that they could have sold more, too. ABC News says that the phone was in short supply in many markets. Maybe they are taking cues from the video game market, building up momentum. However, it’s more likely that Apple is looking at 2007 sales numbers. When the first incarnation of the iPhone hit last year, it took a little over a month to hit the one-million mark.
The new 3G boasts faster networking, built-in GPS, and over 800 third-party applications, which are available through the new App Store. Assuming you sign up for AT&T, the iPhone 3G will cost you $199 for the 8GB model and $299 for 16GB.
