All of those minutes, months and years that you spend perfecting your couch groove will not be in vain after all. Apparently, you can start racking up freebies while channel surfing, via the new Viggle app.
Launched yesterday, the Viggle app works with iPhones and iPads (Android is coming!). When you go to watch TV, make sure to have that portable with you. Then, launch the app and it will “listen” in to what you’re watching. Instead of making fun of your programming choices, however, Viggle actually credits TV watchers for every minute they’re watching.
Viggle users can earn about two credits per minute, which also includes DVR time. Once you have 7,500 points, you can cash them in for gift cards to Burger King, Starbucks, Apple’s iTunes, Best Buy and CVS.
Cards range from $5 to $50, and the company plans to add larger rewards, such as iPods and TVs, in the future. For now, though, free downloads, coffee and fries are a nice little bonus for something you were already going to do anyway.
According to Yahoo, Viggle will eventually offer extra credits for watching specific shows, as well as ads. The company also plans to offer sign-up incentives, as well as credits for users to recruit other users.
Also, if you’re thinking about cheating the system, Viggle has put in a few safeguards. We’re not sure how it knows that you don’t leave the TV on all day. That said, do you need free coffee that badly?
