This Vail, Colo., home would have plenty to show off even if it wasn’t decked out with electronics.
There’s the full outdoor Viking kitchen; the intricate woodwork throughout; slabbed marble, and even an LED-backlit slab of onyx for glowing results in one of the bathrooms—all part of what’s gotten architectural magazines interested in this contemporary mountain abode.
But the homeowner is obviously a serious audio/video enthusiast, and someone who knows a well-appointed equipment rack when he sees one. So much so that, according to Brad Ryan of custom electronics firm Elite Electronic Designs, the owner likes including a visit to the dedicated equipment closet to give guests a tour of the back of the four stacked racks.
“All wiring for the low voltage was painstaking color organized as the homeowner likes to show off the rear of the racks,” says Ryan. “The head-end has its own room with separate air conditioning to keep the equipment running cool.”
Yes, this home pretty much runs on all of its fun electronics, including: AMX home automation, Vantage lighting controls, Lutron shade controls, Kaleidescape media servers, AMX distributed audio in 24 zones, SpeakerCraft in-ceiling speakers throughout every room, bathroom and shower, and Axis HD surveillance cameras. There’s no true dedicated home theater, but the media room is powerful enough to delight these owners. It features one of the two 65-inch Runco plasmas (there are also five ultra-slim Hitachi LCDs in the home) and a high-performance Triad speakers/Audio Control amplification sound system that we hope doesn’t get cranked up enough to cause any avalanches.
In line with the modern aesthetics, the home’s Vantage lighting system features Euro-style Bticino keypads that are simplistic in their elegance, as well as touch-button control of the 28 Lutron QED shades and Romans.
An automation system from AMX is the brains behind this smart home, with five 10-inch touchscreens and five remotes providing the convenient and easy-to-operate housewide controls. That includes the ability to check out what’s happening on any of the nine HD cameras right from a touchpanel.
Sure, Vail is more known as a wintertime vacation destination, but who would want to leave this place any time during the year?
