As the holiday season approaches, it looks as though everyone wants their Blu-ray device under your tree.
Sharp just announced the BD-HP21H. This new model boasts a 24Hz frame rate, Bonus View features, and a quick-start mode. One thing we don’t care for: The company’s October release date is just for the UK; there’s no info on which (if any) other areas might see the release.
Sherwood has something for the U.S.—both for the high-end and budget-minded. Twice says that the company is planning the BDP-6003 ($499) and the BDP-5003 ($299). The 6003 has Blu-ray Profile 2.0 status and 5.1-channel sound. The 5003 gets Profile 1.1, with two-channel analog output. Each one has a front panel full of ports, as well as DivX, JPEG and MP3 support. Both will get their big debut at next week’s CEDIA show; the BDP-6003 will come in September, with the 5003 arriving the following month.
Next up is Netlogic’s BDP810. EngadgetHD says the unit has Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD support, 24 frames per second, and frankly, very little other important info. Still, it’s got an October release date.
Instead of a stand-alone player, JVC is packaging its high-def offering into a whole home-theater-in-a-box system, the NX-BD3. It’s got a 200-watt sub, DLNA and a 4x55 amplifier. All of that seems moot, considering the system only provides 2.1-channel sound. To add to the semi-lame list, the unit doesn’t have DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD support, and Electronista says that the unit is “Profile 1.1 compliant, but will not be upgradeable profile 2.0.” Oh—it’s also got a $1,465 price tag. For that kind of cash, you’d be better off with Samsung’s HT-BD2E, which is only $799 for 5.1 sound.
To compensate for some of that sadness, Panasonic has not one, but two, new entries coming. EngadgetHD says that both the DMP-BD35 and DMP-BD55 have every Blu-ray feature under the sun, as well as a “45nm 3rd-generation UniPhier processor.” It also has full 7.1-channel goodness and Profile 2.0 to boot. The only thing missing is a release date and price on each.

Blu-Ray’s sound capabilities are at least as big, if not a bigger step up from DVD than the picture quality. The manufacturers who are short-changing the audio port6ion of their players are really missing the point.
