Even with all of the wonderful mount manufacturers out there, sometimes you just can’t find the perfect solution.

In this case, custom electronics pro Easton Altree of E Cubed in Portland, Ore., engineered his own mount to hang a plasma from above.

Altree had a 0.25-inch brushed stainless plate cut to the TV’s size. Holes were drilled into it to match up with the mounting holes on the display.

The fabricator welded a stainless tube to either side of the plate, through which the stainless cables would run. To hold the mount in place, the fabricator milled some stainless ingots that slid onto the cable and were held firm by two Allen head set-screws each.

The cables were attached to eye-lags bolted into the ceiling.

“The finished mount is very unique and has a natural tilt that lent itself well to the several applications we used it for,” says Altree.

For completely free-standing displays (below), Altree ran power cable down one side and signal cables down the other. To tidy up the cables and give the whole set-up a cool industrial look, he wrapped them with steel mesh jackets “that hot rod guys put on the hoses under their hoods,” he says.
