Another video-on-demand box is about to descend upon living rooms everywhere—or at least somewhere.

The Vudu set-top box is now available for online purchase, and will be shipping by the end of the month. The box has a 250GB hard drive, and access to about 5,000 movies at the touch of a button.

Of course, such access to entertainment does not come cheap. It’s $399, which seems to be steep to people that already have a set-top box, HBO, etc. In other words, we’ve seen it before and we’re wondering if any of these things will ever take off a la TiVo.

David Pogue of “The New York Times” wrote up a review, but you have to be a Times subscriber to access it. However, if you’ve got four minutes to kill, you can watch Pogue act out his experience via video. Bottom line: He seems to like it.

He also got to play around with it for free. Movies are $2 to $4 for a 24-hour viewing period. You can also buy them for the price of a standard DVD.

Like Pogue, Gizmodo’s recent experience was that there just weren’t enough good titles to keep the entertainment-hungry happy. The company, however, says they plan to have 10,000 movies available soon, and some even in HD.
