Watching 3D content at home using a front projector took hold in a meaningful way during the third quarter of 2011.
Quixel Research’s USA Home Theater and Entertainment Front Projector Market Review for Q3 2011 revealed that unit sales of 3D projectors increased 121 percent from Q2 2011 to Q3 2011, accounting for more than 16 percent of the total home projection category.
“The immersive nature of front projection is one of the primary reasons consumers install home theaters and is also the primary reason movie goers value 3D movies and entertainment,” says Tamaryn Pratt, Quixel Research’s principal. “It is one of those proverbial marriage made in heaven stories, so expect to see 3D in more than half of the projectors by this time next year.”
Revenues for 3D home projectors grew 14 percent from Q2 2011 to Q3 2011, or far less significantly than volume for the same time period due to the recent onslaught of low cost 3D models in market.
Overall, the home theater and entertainment front projector market saw a dip in volume quarter-to-quarter, falling 7 percent from Q2 2011 to Q3 2011 but growing 2 percent year-to-year.
Lower-priced products, such as these 3D projectors from Optoma, have probably contributed to the increased popularity.

Has 3D popularity increased, or are more manufactuers building it in as a feature that you are buying whether you want it or not?
Also, not to be a cynic, but a 100% increase of a very small number is pretty easy to accomplish. If the article reported the percentage of 3D capable projectors sold vs 2D projectors, it would have been a more useful fact.

It’s hard to imagine life without remote controls, but it’s been a long, strange path to the modern incarnation we know and love today.
@Paul, yes you’re probably right that the increased number of 3D projectors available is largely the deciding factor. The research does not state how much people are using the feature. It be interesting to see how many 3D glasses are sold for each 3D display.
