While the computer and video game industry may be experiencing a temporary setback given lower than anticipated sales of even blockbuster titles like Guitar Hero: World Tour, don’t cry for joystick lovers just yet. Coming off a year that brought us jaw-dropping outings such as Spore, Fallout 3, LittleBigPlanet, Grand Theft Auto IV and Wii Fit, it may seem hard to believe, but the best is still ahead.

Promising a banner crop of virtual amusements, even with release dates for potential genre-redefining smashes like Starcraft II and Diablo III dubious, there remains plenty for players to get excited about in 2009. Thank a slate of titles that encompasses franchises old and new for every imaginable platform including handhelds and set-tops, and that speak to almost any age group or interest type. Whether knocking the stuffing out of neighbors using killer kung fu moves, warring with the Greek gods themselves or running shrieking from hordes of rampaging undead is your bag, rejoice. From fantasy to sci-fi, fresh looks at everyday modern life to glimpses of the far future, software manufacturers have got you covered. Even if, of course, it means that those few diehards who’ve previously held out on upgrading to high-def are going to be sorely tempted to finally pony up and spring for a next-gen console and flat-screen HDTV.

Why? Regardless of whether they run in 480i or 1080p, at first glance, each of the titles highlighted here – among this year’s most anticipated and/or cutting-edge outings – looks set to blow audiences away. Undoubtedly, you could just as easily make a case for dozens of equally well-pedigreed alternatives (i.e. Batman: Arkham Asylum, Skate 2, inFamous, Halo Wars, Final Fantasy XIII, etc.). But with so many great options to choose from, who cares? No matter which is tops of your list, one thing’s for certain. If true bliss can be measured in burnt-out brain cells, shattered relationships and molding pizza boxes, heck… We’re all guaranteed to walk away winners here shortly.
