We heard about Sony’s plans to update its standalone and HTIB Blu-ray players for 3D capability earlier this week, so it’s only logical that the company has the firmware upgrade in the works for its most popular Blu-ray device as well.

The Sony PlayStation 3 will be getting the 3D treatment for its gaming and Blu-ray platforms this summer, according to Pocket-lint.com (via Engadget HD), which talked to director of hardware marketing John Koller about the 3D transition.

The summer timeframe coincides with the planned firmware upgrade rollout for Sony’s compatible Bravia LCD TVs as well as the Blu-ray players announced as such this week—the BDP-S470, BDP-S570 standalone players and BDV-E770W and BDV-E570 Blu-ray home theater systems.

Koller added that Sony is developing stereoscopic 3D game titles for the PS3, to be released separately at some point this year, and that the PlayStation Network is constantly evolving so be on the lookout for more news regarding that service as well.

Sounds like a busy and blockbuster summer on the way for Sony, and those early adopters of 3D technology.

I’m always a step or two behind in my electronics configuration. I purchased a Sony Bravia XBR-2 just weeks before the next model came out, just missing the opportunity for 120hz refresh rates.  I do have a PS3; it will be nice to know that it can play 3D games and I suppose 3D Blu-Ray discs when they come out too. I guess when Avatar makes it out on a 3D disc, I’ll have to look for a new panel to go with it! Sigh….

Thats why you get a PS3. The whole thing is upgradable, not so much with regular blu-ray players

Has it been confirmed by any other mfrs. whether or not their existing Blu-ray players will be administered a 3D update?

I have an Oppo BDP-83 and LG BD390. I would like to keep these players and still be able to take advantage of 3D.
